Housable ADU Project Case Study:
Process and Solution: The homeowner wanted to convert one of two garages into a studio JADU. We modified the homeowner’s design concept to meet the goals of the project. A clever rearrangement of bathrooms allowed the homeowner to repurpose it for a JADU. Because the homeowner wanted to preserve the garage door and provide for additional storage, a small storage space was designed behind the existing door as a solution. To allow the garage door to fold up, the ceiling was dropped.
In addition to helping with the design, Housable also supported the permitting process. The final JADU included a sleeping and living area, a full kitchen, and a bathroom with a bath.
Unique Project Traits: The conversion included preserving the garage door to limit the impact to the neighborhood. The space between the garage door and the JADU interior wall serves as a small storage space.
Using this model as the starting point, this project was customized to the owner's preferences and the conditions of the property.
