Goal: The property owner wanted to convert their existing detached garage into an ADU for extra income.

Design Challenge: The existing detached garage was just over 400 square feet and was built within the side and rear setback area, limiting expansion options. The homeowner also wanted a very budget friendly conversion.

Process and Solution: The customer chose to renovate the existing garage into a modern, bright, and efficient living space. A tempered glass door and skylight were added to bring more natural light into the space. The design utilized a semi-open floor plan with one living area adjacent to the dining bar and a sleeping area visually separated from the rest of the ADU with a structural beam.

The final ADU was a studio with a sleeping nook, a living/dining area, a full kitchen, a bathroom with a large shower, and a separate laundry and utility area accessed via the former garage door. This project salvaged usable materials from the garage, saving on the final construction costs.
